Our blender, Lauren Limbach, likes to say that our annual La Folie Grand Reserve release is like taking La Folie to the red carpet. It’s the one time each year where we take our beloved signature sour, La Folie, and reinvent its world by introducing some of the most intriguing, exotic, and luxurious ingredients we can get our hands on. The inspiration for 2021’s La Folie Grand Reserve came from Lauren’s love for Amaro and her secret love for the Argentinian cocktail, playfully known as “Fernandito”.
The Sour: America’s pioneering sour ale, La Folie is an award winning Flanders-inspired sour. La Folie’s notes of sour plum, green apple, and cocoa are the result of many months maturing in French oak foeders containing the oldest, continuous souring culture in America.
The Barrels: Our dark lager based beer was laid down in freshly emptied Fernet and Bourbon barrels from our friends at Leopold Bros Distillery in Denver. They acidified for 8 months as the spirit flavors extracted and enhanced the dark sour profiles. Along with a core of bitter roots, the spirit is aged in used Chardonnay barrels with additions or rose petals, elderflower, honeysuckle, chamomile, and mint. This unique approach brings layers of flavor to an already impressive profile and distinguished it from other fernets. We blended-in a handful of Bourbon barrels to further build depth and complexity with oak, vanilla, spice, and bourbon flavors. 8.0% ABV
